International School Goodbyes: How to Help Your Child

The Goodbyes That Come With Raising a Child Internationally

Raising our daughter internationally has given her so much: friendships across cultures, new perspectives and a wonderful openness to the world.

We knew this life would also bring goodbyes, alongside all the wonderful hellos.

These goodbyes are never easy. What I have learned is that small, intentional steps can make them a little gentler—for our children and for us as parents.

We cannot remove the sadness, but we can help our children honour their friendships, feel secure through change and remain open to the next hello.

1. Make space for sadness

We didn’t rush our daughter to feel better.

Instead, we gave her time to miss her friend and talk about how she was feeling. Missing someone shows that the friendship mattered. Children need to know that sadness is a natural part of saying goodbye.

2. Make the goodbye meaningful

A final afternoon together, a handwritten card or a small photo book can give the friendship a meaningful ending.

It creates a memory the children can keep and makes the goodbye feel less sudden.

3. Be realistic about staying in touch

Staying connected can be comforting, but promises of constant calls and messages can quickly become difficult to maintain.

We kept it simple and realistic. An occasional message, voice note or birthday card can keep the connection alive while giving both children space to move forward.

4. Hold on to routines

When friendships change, familiar activities and family rituals can offer stability.

Regular family meals, favourite activities and everyday routines helped our daughter feel secure when another part of her world was changing.

5. Make room for the next hello

We gently encouraged new connections without expecting another child to replace the friend who had left.

A new friendship does not take away from an old one. Children can miss someone while also making space for somebody new.

Helping Children Through Change

International family life will always include both hellos and goodbyes.

We may not be able to make every goodbye painless, but we can help our children feel understood and supported—and give them the confidence to open their hearts again.

If your family has found something that helps, I would love to hear it. Join the conversation on Instagram at @MemoriesThatMatterBooks and share this with another international parent who may find it useful.
